Reader's Workshop: Making Inferences

Students have been doing such great work during Reader's Workshop. We have been talking about making inferences as we read our books. We use our schema, pictures, and clues in the books to draw conclusions and make predictions. Here students are working together to make an inference about the book My Rotten Redheaded Big Brother by Patricia Polacco.

Mystery Reader

We had a special Mystery Reader last Friday. Mrs. Wagner, Grant's mom, brought two special books to share with our class. We really enjoy having visitors come read to us!

Cooperation Activity

We had a special visitor come in last week to help us with a cooperation activity. Mr. Egli brought marshmellows and toothpicks and divided the class into groups. Students had to work together to make the highest tower while using only the marshmellows and toothpicks. This was a neat activity for students to work on cooperation and teamwork.

Our second grade class has been learning about the country of Haiti this week. We started writing letters to kids who live in an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Mr. Egli will be traveling their next week to deliver our letters and work with the children. I am so proud of our classroom! Our class decided to bring in school supplies to send down to the kids too. I am very excited about their willingness to help others. They have such giving hearts. Our class has enjoyed learning about the Haitian culture, food, and art.

Pumpkin Painting

Here we are painting our pumpkins we picked at Hilger's Farm. FUN!

Letters to the Soldiers

This week we wrote letters to the soldiers serving in Iraq. Students got to see a short powerpoint presentation of pictures of the children, huge spiders, and soldiers in Iraq. Students were very interested in the culture and climate. We discussed the reasons why we should write to the men and women fighting for our country. Students did a wonderful job encouraging those who are far away from their families at this time.

The Food Pyramid

We have been learning about the Food Pyramid in our second grade classroom. Students have enjoyed learning about the 5 food groups and how these food groups help our bodies stay healthy. We have also discussed how exercise is an important part of staying fit. Students did an activity where they were blindfolded and had to try some food. They had to take a guess as to what the food was and what food group it is in.
