Our second grade class has been learning about the country of Haiti this week. We started writing letters to kids who live in an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Mr. Egli will be traveling their next week to deliver our letters and work with the children. I am so proud of our classroom! Our class decided to bring in school supplies to send down to the kids too. I am very excited about their willingness to help others. They have such giving hearts. Our class has enjoyed learning about the Haitian culture, food, and art.

Letters to the Soldiers
This week we wrote letters to the soldiers serving in Iraq. Students got to see a short powerpoint presentation of pictures of the children, huge spiders, and soldiers in Iraq. Students were very interested in the culture and climate. We discussed the reasons why we should write to the men and women fighting for our country. Students did a wonderful job encouraging those who are far away from their families at this time.

Fun Fall Field Trip!
Our 2nd grade class had a wonderful time on our field trip to Hilger's Farm! We went on a hay ride, picked a pumpkin to take home, learned more about pumpkins, and got to play with animals at the petting zoo. We had such a beautiful day to be outside. Thanks to all the parent chaperones who helped make the day so special!

Pumpkin Math
This week our class worked on some pumpkin math. Students weighed the pumpkin, measured the circumference, and tested whether or not the pumpkin floated. Our 2nd grade class also learned that not all pumpkins are orange, some are white or yellow. We also found out that pumpkins can weigh up to 800 pounds!

The Food Pyramid
We have been learning about the Food Pyramid in our second grade classroom. Students have enjoyed learning about the 5 food groups and how these food groups help our bodies stay healthy. We have also discussed how exercise is an important part of staying fit. Students did an activity where they were blindfolded and had to try some food. They had to take a guess as to what the food was and what food group it is in.
Mystery Reader
Students enjoyed having our second Mystery Reader visit our class on Friday. Mr. Hagg, Miriam's father, brought two of his favorite children's books to share with our classroom. Students are very thankful that parents and grandparents take time our of their day to come be special readers in our room!
Reader's Workshop: Text-to-Text Connections
Students have been working on making connections to books as they read. Last week, we discussed making text-to-text connections. Students were given two versions of a fairy tale story. They were then asked to find the similarities and differences between the two by using a Venn Diagram. Students are using their good thinking to make great connections!
