Grandparents Day!
Wednesday was Grandparents Day and students wrote a poem for their special family members. Our poems were a recipe with the ingredients that make up our wonderful grandpas and grandmas. Here is one of our favorite grandparent poems:
20% Cheerful
10% Spectacular Cookies
10% Hilarious
10% Gardener
10% Tight Hugs
10% Stylish
10% Delicious Cooking
Add it all together, and you've got...
100% Grandma!

Writing Conferences
Our 3rd grade class loves our Writers Workshop time! Right now we are working on writing Small Moment Stories. Students are writing about real events that have happened in their lives. Friday we met with our writing buddies to conference about one of our Small Moment Stories and to also highlight the "juicy" words used in our stories. This was a wonderful time for students to interact and learn through reading one another's writing.

Our Field Trip Around Amo
We had an exciting field trip last Friday. 3rd Graders took a walking field trip around our very own community, Amo, IN! Students have been learning about communities in Social Studies. Our West Best secretary, Mrs. Estes, was so generous, and took our class on a walking tour through the town. Here are some interesting facts about our town:
*Amo means "love" in Latin
*Our town of Amo is the only town/city with this name in the entire U.S.
*Our post office used to be a bank
*The library used to be a train station that ran from Greencastle into Indianapolis

Oh...how we LOVE to write!
We have been working in our Writer's Notebooks the first week of school on creating lists, Quickwrites, Story Starters, and collecting Artifacts. Our 3rd grade class especially loved sharing all their special Artifacts (which are items that represent US!) they brought in. Our Writer's Notebooks are a place to collect all of our creative ideas for writing. So whenever a student says to Mrs. Egli, "I don't know what to write about...", she can have them turn to their Notebooks where they have thought of countless ideas!

Off We Go....
We have had a wonderful first week of school. Our 3rd grade class has formed our Class Constitution, started organizing and making lists in our Writer's Notebooks, and even have had Dr. Egli come visit our classroom several times! Dr. Egli has taught us a fun way to remember the steps of the Scientific Method :) It has been amazing to see the students' imaginations shine through during Writers Workshop time---it's one of my favorite parts of the day!

New Beginnings...
Welcome to our 3rd Grade Class Blog! I am so excited to start a new school year and meet all the new 3rd graders. I hope that this blog will be a fun way to inform you of what we are learning in our classroom.
I am really looking forward to working at Mill Creek West Elementary! Everyone has been so helpful and kind. This school truly is a wonderful environment with motivated teachers.
Hopefully, you will visit our class site often to see what amazing things we are learning!

Hendricks Power Presentation
Mr. Hite, from Hendrick's Power, came to our school for a presentation on Electricity Safety. It was awesome! We discussed conductors, insulators, and what to do in case we see an electrical power line down. Mr. Hite performed some interesting experiments to see whether or not objects were good conductors. Students learned many new facts about electricity!
